Ichigo Budapest: Sushi Burritos, Bowls and Strawberry Tapioca on Király utca
On this page
Ichigo is where to go on Király utca when you want a proper meal in your hand rather than another round: sushi rolled to the size of a burrito, stuffed with fish, steak or tofu, raw vegetables and a sauce, for a little over 4,000 HUF. Order the Spicy Tuna or Pink Salmon roll at 4,300 HUF (about $13.50), or the newer Crispy Salmon at 4,700 HUF (about $14.50). Vegans get the Green Goddess roll or bowl at 4,200 HUF (about $13), and the one dessert to save room for is the fresh strawberry tapioca at 2,400 HUF (about $7.50). It opens at 11:00 and closes at 22:00 every day, which makes it an easy lunch before a walk through the Jewish Quarter or a filling dinner before the bars on the same street.

Sushi as street food
Ichigo calls its food “Fresh Umami Bites”. The idea is a sushi roll big enough to hold like a burrito, heavy on vegetables and sauce, plus a bowl version of each roll for anyone who would rather eat from a bowl. “Japanese” is the inspiration, not the rulebook: the sauces include truffle aioli and chipotle mayo, and the drinks run from Japanese beer to melon soda.
The place opened in late 2023 and comes from the team behind Meshuga in Gozsdu udvar, a few minutes’ walk down the same street. When Street Kitchen wrote it up that November, it described an Asian-inspired room with lantern walls and an open kitchen where you can watch your roll being built.
Király utca is the street that splits District VI from District VII, and number 40 is on the District VI side. You are a short walk from the ruin bars, Gozsdu udvar and the Opera on Andrássy út.
What to order
You pick a roll or a bowl, a size, white sushi rice or red rice (on the chicken or tofu items you choose the protein instead), and one sauce, which is included in the price. Extra sauces cost 600 HUF (about $2) each.
Rolls and bowls (regular / big):
| Dish | Menu tags worth knowing | Regular | Big |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spicy Tuna | Fish, hot, peanuts, tree nuts | 4,300 HUF (about $13.50) | 5,000 HUF (about $15.50) |
| Pink Salmon | Fish, dairy-free | 4,300 HUF (about $13.50) | 5,000 HUF (about $15.50) |
| Minute Steak | Dairy-free | 4,300 HUF (about $13.50) | 5,100 HUF (about $15.50) |
| Crispy Salmon (brand new) | Fish | 4,700 HUF (about $14.50) | 5,200 HUF (about $16) |
| Green Goddess | Vegan | 4,200 HUF (about $13) | 4,900 HUF (about $15) |
| Super Avocado | Vegan | 3,800 HUF (about $11.50) | 4,300 HUF (about $13.50) |
| Crispy Chicken or Tofu | Peanuts, tree nuts | 3,700 HUF (about $11.50) | 4,300 HUF (about $13.50) |
Each roll also comes as a bowl at the same price. When Street Kitchen wrote it up, the two roll sizes measured 16 and 22 cm, made to be eaten by hand without chopsticks.
Sauces: truffle aioli, chipotle mayo, Japanese mayo, soy BBQ and a vegan wasabi mayo. When Ichigo opened, Funzine singled out the steak roll with house-made truffle aioli.
On the side: miso soup at 1,800 HUF (about $5.50), togarashi rice chips at 1,000 HUF (about $3), and tofu or chicken nuggets at 3,200 HUF (about $10).
Dessert: tapioca pudding with fresh strawberry or fresh banana, both 2,400 HUF (about $7.50). The strawberry one shares the restaurant’s name (ichigo is Japanese for strawberry); it is vegetarian, while the banana one is vegan.
Drinks: Asahi at 1,400 HUF (about $4.50), Sapporo or Kirin at 2,400 HUF (about $7.50), and Hatakosen sodas in classic, melon and strawberry at 1,500 HUF (about $4.50).
Take-away adds 100 HUF on a few items, such as the rice chips.
Prices are in HUF. Converted at 1 USD = 324 HUF, the ECB rate on 15 October 2026. Rates move, so treat the dollar figures as indicative.
Vegan, dairy-free, and why it is not a gluten-free pick
Vegans eat well here. The Green Goddess and Super Avocado rolls and bowls are marked vegan, as are the miso soup, the rice chips, the vegan wasabi mayo, the soy BBQ sauce and the banana tapioca. Most of the fish and meat rolls are tagged dairy-free too, which helps if you avoid lactose. For more plant-based places, see our vegan and vegetarian Budapest guide.
Gluten is a different story. The current menu tags almost every roll, bowl, sauce, side and both tapiocas with wheat. Write-ups from the 2023 opening mentioned gluten-free options; the menu on its own website now tags almost everything with wheat. With celiac disease or a strict gluten-free diet, skip it and use our gluten-free Budapest guide instead.
Spicy Tuna, the Crispy Chicken or Tofu items and the chipotle mayo carry peanut and tree nut tags, and both tapiocas are topped with walnuts. If you have a nut allergy, say so when you order.
How ordering works
There is no table booking on Ichigo’s website. You can walk in and eat there, or order online through the site for pickup, for home delivery or, the site says, for faster service when you eat in. Expect to choose a size, a rice and, on the chicken or tofu items, the protein.
Who will like it
Go if you want a fast, filling lunch or dinner in the middle of the nightlife district, if you eat vegan or travel with someone who does, or if you want sushi flavors without a sit-down Japanese restaurant bill. Skip it if you are after traditional nigiri and sashimi made in front of you: for that, our Budapest sushi guide covers chef-run counters like Kicsi Japán. For ramen nearby, Hachi-Ko on Madách Imre út is a short walk away. If you are exploring the area on foot, Ichigo sits a few minutes from the route of our Jewish Quarter walk, which crosses Király utca at Gozsdu udvar.
