Thanksgiving falls on Thursday 26 November 2026, and in Budapest it is just a Thursday. Hungary does not celebrate it, nobody gets the day off, and the city is already busy with Christmas markets. That is good news for Americans who want the dinner anyway: the shops are open, a few kitchens cook the whole menu, and a turkey can be ordered. Below are the 2026 dinners announced so far, a turkey you can take home, and how to put the meal together yourself.

Is Thanksgiving a thing in Hungary?

No. Thanksgiving is an American and Canadian holiday, and Hungary has no version of it. Hungarians know the word, hálaadás, mostly from American films and TV.

That has two practical effects.

  • Everything is open. Thursday 26 November 2026 is a normal working day. Supermarkets, market halls, pharmacies, museums, baths and restaurants keep their usual weekday hours, so you can shop for the meal on the day itself.
  • You have to look for it. A Thanksgiving dinner here is a special event, not a default. Only a handful of places cook one, and they usually need a booking.

The closest Hungarian cousin is St Martin’s Day on 11 November, a goose and new-wine feast. Our November guide has the St Martin’s festival dates and the rest of the month.

Thanksgiving dinners in 2026

By 26 October 2026 we had found two Thanksgiving offers on the venues’ own pages: the Kempinski’s 2026 dinner and Borganika’s 2026 Friendsgiving on Saturday 28 November, two days after Thanksgiving itself. We add venues as they announce.

Kempinski Hotel Corvinus. The hotel’s dinner is the classic plate: carved turkey, stuffing, garnishes and gravy, served as three courses, with the full menu still to be announced. It is the easy choice for a family, since children under four eat free and children up to twelve pay half. The hotel is in the city center, near the Chain Bridge.

Borganika. Borganika is a cooking and event venue on the upper floor of the Klauzál tér market hall in District VII. Its Friendsgiving is hosted by Andrew, who goes by American in Csepel, and the idea is to cook, eat and drink together. The cook-and-dinner ticket puts you in the kitchen for the preparation as well. It runs on Saturday 28 November 2026, 15:00 to 18:00, the Saturday after Thanksgiving, at Akácfa utca 42-48, with tickets from Borganika’s shop. Confirm the date when you buy. If you like the format, our food tours and cooking classes guide covers the rest of the city’s classes.

If neither fits, our best restaurants guide is the place to pick a good dinner that night, turkey or not.

A cooked turkey to take home

If you have a kitchen and a table but no wish to roast, the Kempinski Hotel Corvinus sells a turkey to take away.

  • Size and price: one turkey for 8 to 10 people, with a wide selection of sides and one dessert, HUF 90,000.
  • Dates: from 26 November to 26 December 2026.
  • Order: at least 72 hours ahead, with full payment up front to confirm. The hotel makes a limited number.
  • Delivery: within Budapest on request, HUF 10,000 extra.

For a Thursday dinner, that means ordering by Monday 23 November.

Buying a turkey and the trimmings yourself

This is the cheapest way to do it, and the market halls make it easy, as long as you plan a few days ahead.

Order the bird. Turkey (pulyka) is ordinary meat in Hungary, but it is mostly sold in parts: breast (pulykamell) and thigh (pulykacomb). A whole bird is something you ask for. Go to a poultry stall (baromfi) in a market hall a few days to a week before, say egész pulyka, give the weight you want, and agree on a pick-up day. The Great Market Hall is the obvious place to start, since the butchers sit on its ground floor.

Check your oven first. Many rental apartments have a small oven. Measure it before you order a large bird, or buy a smaller one and add a breast roast on the side.

Shop on the day if you need to. The Great Market Hall opens Monday to Friday 06:00 to 18:00 and Saturday 06:00 to 16:00, so Thursday 26 November is a full trading day. Supermarkets keep their normal hours too.

Words for the shopping list.

The rest of the long weekend

Thanksgiving week in Budapest is already Christmas season. The Basilica Christmas market has been open since 13 November and runs to 1 January 2027, from 11:00 every day, to 22:00 on Thursday and to 23:00 on Friday and Saturday. Our Christmas in Budapest guide has every market and the December holidays, and the Christmas markets guide covers what is on the stalls.

Cold air is also what makes an outdoor thermal pool worth it, and the November guide has the bath hours for the month.

The US Embassy and American community events

By 26 October 2026 we had found no public 2026 Thanksgiving event from the US Embassy or from American community groups. We add any that are published.

Sources, all read 26 October 2026: the Kempinski Thanksgiving dinner from the hotel’s Thanksgiving page; the Kempinski takeaway turkey from its turkey and goose to go page; the Borganika Friendsgiving tickets and prices from Borganika’s shop, and its date, time and address from Borganika’s Facebook event; Borganika’s location in the Klauzál tér market hall from borganika.hu; Great Market Hall hours from the operator’s opening hours page; the Basilica Christmas market season and hours from adventbazilika.hu. Good to know

Does Hungary celebrate Thanksgiving?

No. Thanksgiving is an American and Canadian holiday, and Hungary does not observe it. Most Hungarians know it from films and TV, but there is no day off and no family tradition around it. The closest Hungarian cousin is St Martin's Day on 11 November, when goose and the new wine are the point.

Is Thanksgiving a public holiday in Hungary? Are shops open?

It is not a public holiday. Thursday 26 November 2026 is an ordinary working day in Hungary, so supermarkets, market halls, pharmacies, museums and restaurants keep their usual weekday hours. The Great Market Hall, for example, is open 06:00 to 18:00 that day.

Where can I eat a Thanksgiving dinner in Budapest in 2026?

By 26 October 2026 we had found two offers on the venues' own pages. The Kempinski Hotel Corvinus serves a three-course Thanksgiving dinner with carved turkey, stuffing and gravy on 26 November, 18:30 to 22:30, for HUF 18,600 per adult plus 15% service. Borganika, in the Klauzál tér market hall, sells tickets for a Friendsgiving on Saturday 28 November, 15:00 to 18:00, hosted by Andrew, known as American in Csepel: HUF 34,500 for dinner, HUF 36,500 if you also cook. We add venues as they announce.

Can I order a cooked turkey to take away in Budapest?

Yes. The Kempinski Hotel Corvinus sells a turkey for 8 to 10 people, with a wide selection of sides and one dessert, for HUF 90,000, from 26 November to 26 December 2026. Order at least 72 hours ahead and pay in full to confirm. Delivery within Budapest costs HUF 10,000 extra, and the hotel makes a limited number.

Ask at a poultry stall in a market hall, such as the Great Market Hall, a few days to a week ahead. Turkey is common in Hungary but mostly sold as breast or thigh, so say egész pulyka, a whole turkey, and give the weight you want. Measure your oven first: many rental apartments have a small one.

What else is on in Budapest on Thanksgiving weekend?

The Christmas season is already running. The Basilica Christmas market has been open since 13 November and stays open to 1 January 2027, 11:00 to 22:00 on Thursdays and to 23:00 on Friday and Saturday. Add a thermal bath in the cold air and you have a full long weekend.
