The City of Queens
From 1216 the Bishop of Veszprém held, in law, the right to crown Hungary’s queens. The first of them, Gisela of Bavaria, wife of King Stephen, is tied to the founding of the cathedral here, and she gave its church the embroidered vestment that became the Hungarian coronation mantle. That is why Veszprém still calls itself the city of queens.
Today the city on its narrow dolomite ridge is one of the easiest day trips from Budapest. You walk one pedestrian street through the whole castle quarter, climb a fire tower that plays a tune every hour, and join a guided walk into the queens’ chapel and a Baroque palace. Below the hill, a valley path leads to a viaduct with the best view of the town, and Herend’s porcelain workshop is 20 to 30 minutes away by bus. It was European Capital of Culture in 2023 and is a UNESCO City of Music. The InterCity takes under an hour and a half. The catch is the calendar: on Mondays almost everything is shut.

Vár utca and the Fire Tower
The castle quarter is a single street, Vár utca, running from Óváros tér up the ridge to the statue of Stephen and Gisela at its far end. It is free to walk at any hour. Since 2022 the archdiocese has been renewing the 18 buildings along it, so expect fresh facades and the odd scaffold.
The Fire Tower (Tűztorony) stands at the bottom of the street. It is 48 meters tall, on a base that is probably medieval, with a late-Baroque top and balcony added in 1811 to 1814. Every hour it plays Antal Csermák’s Verbunkos, and the balcony looks out over the whole city. It is open Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 to 17:00, with the last tickets at 16:30. Tickets are 1,500 Ft (about $4.60), sold at the Várkapu gift shop at Vár utca 4. The stairs are narrow, and you climb at your own risk. It makes a good first stop, before the 10:30 walk.

Inside the Castle: The Guided Walk
The two finest interiors on the hill are open only with a guide. The Gizella Chapel is a two-story chapel from the 13th century with frescoes of the apostles from the same period. The Archbishop’s Palace next door was designed by Jakab Fellner and built in 1765 to 1776, and in 1820 Archduke Joseph received Tsar Alexander I there. You can look into the chapel through a glass door from outside, but that is all you see without the walk.
The archdiocese’s “Fény és áhítat” walk covers both in about 70 minutes for 3,500 Ft (about $10.80), or 4,000 Ft (about $12.30) with the exhibitions in the Biró–Giczey House. Walks leave from the Biró–Giczey House, Vár utca 31, and through 29 November they start at 10:30 and 14:00, Saturdays included, with a second walk at 16:00 that covers the cathedral and its crypt. Weekday dates and the schedule after November are on the archdiocese’s walk page, so check it before you go. The walks are in Hungarian and places are limited, so book online for a weekend. An English-speaking guide costs 50% more and has to be arranged in advance.
The Biró–Giczey House itself holds the archdiocese’s collection, sold as the Queen Gisela Museum exhibitions: 1,500 Ft (about $4.60), Tuesday to Sunday. One of its four shows displays finds from the castle-hill excavations, including a coin from the time of St Stephen.
St Michael’s Cathedral and the Benedek Hill Stairs
St Michael’s Cathedral reopened on 12 May 2023 after renovation. It has a new organ with more than 2,300 pipes, and the crypt holds the Baroque tomb of Bishop Márton Padányi Biró. It is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00, closed to visitors during services, and a ticket for the cathedral and crypt costs 500 Ft (about $1.50).
Behind the cathedral, steep, narrow stairs run down to Benedek Hill, a free lookout point with a view across the Séd valley to the viaduct. On the way back, the Dubniczay Palace at Vár utca 29 shows contemporary art, 3,000 Ft (about $9.30) for its five exhibition spaces, open Wednesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00.
The Séd Valley and the Viaduct
The Séd stream curls around the foot of the castle hill, and a paved path follows it for more than 3 km. It is free, flat and accessible, and it passes the ruins of two Árpád-era monasteries, rose gardens and the tunnel of an old miniature railway cut into the rock. Walk it to the St Stephen Viaduct (Szent István völgyhíd), a concrete arch bridge designed by Róbert Folly, with a terrace looking straight back at the castle. Give the walk an hour or two with a café stop. It is the natural afternoon if you skip Herend.

Herend: Porcelain Since 1826
In 1826 the founder of the Herend manufactory began his first porcelain experiments in the building that now holds its museum. The Porcelanium visitor center, 20 to 30 minutes from Veszprém by bus, has two parts:
- The Minimanufaktúra is a guided demonstration workshop. After a short film, throwers and painters show how Herend porcelain is made. It takes about 40 minutes, and the last tour starts at 16:20. This is the factory visit Herend offers.
- The Porcelain Art Museum holds what the manufactory calls the world’s largest collection of Herend pieces.
Both are open Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00 to 17:00, and closed on Sunday and Monday, and on 1 November. A combined ticket is 4,300 Ft (about $13.30) with a Hungarian-speaking guide or 6,500 Ft (about $20.10) with an English-speaking one, and the adult ticket includes a coupon for the Apicius café. Ask for English guiding in advance. Allow about two hours with the museum and a coffee. The visitor center’s 2026 season opened only on 31 March, so for a trip between January and March, check herend.com first.
Getting there: buses leave Veszprém bus station for Herend, autóbusz-váróterem two to four times an hour, 19 to 29 minutes, 450 to 500 Ft. There is no train. Back, the bus from Herend, lakótelep bejárati út leaves at 2 past the hour, 12:02 to 19:02, and reaches Veszprém railway station 20 minutes later, in time for the train to Budapest at 32 past. Or take the bus from Herend, autóbusz-váróterem back to Veszprém bus station, several an hour until about 20:00.
The Zoo and the Laczkó Dezső Museum
Veszprém Zoo sits in the Fejes valley just west of the center and is the one sight open every day, Monday included. Adults pay 7,100 Ft (about $21.90). From 25 October to 30 November tickets are sold 09:00 to 15:00 on weekdays and 09:00 to 16:00 on weekends, and the gates close half an hour after the ticket desk. The paths are steep and gravelly in places, and in cold weather some animals stay indoors. With children it fills half a day; without them, the valley walk is the better use of the afternoon.
The Laczkó Dezső Museum at Erzsébet sétány 1 tells the city’s story in its permanent exhibition for 2,600 Ft (about $8), Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00. Buses 2, 4 and 4A stop at Megyeház tér, a minute away.
Getting There
- From Budapest by train: InterCity from Budapest-Déli every hour on the hour, from 05:00 to 20:00, stopping at Kelenföld seven minutes later. It takes 1 hour 28 minutes from Déli. The fare is 2,200 Ft (about $6.80) plus a seat reservation, 650 Ft in advance. Back, trains leave Veszprém at 32 past every hour, and the last InterCity is the 21:32, arriving at Déli at 22:59. No works are announced on this line before the timetable change on 13 December.
- From Budapest by coach: Volánbusz from Népliget every hour at 25 past, 1 hour 55 minutes, 2,200 Ft, to Veszprém bus station near the center. The last direct coach back leaves at 18:40.
- Station to center: Veszprém station is 3 km from the center. Take V-Busz line 4 or 4A, which leaves at 08 and 38 past the hour and meets every InterCity arriving at 28 past during the day: 11 minutes to the bus station, 14 to Megyeház tér. Line 2 also runs into town, and regional Volánbusz buses reach the bus station in 8 minutes for 400 Ft. A city single is 350 Ft bought in advance or 500 Ft from the driver, and a day ticket is 1,500 Ft.
- By car: the castle streets are narrow and one-way, and the parking at Óváros tér fills up fast and is paid on weekdays. Use one of the parking garages near the center instead.
For trains and tickets in general, see our guide to traveling Hungary by train.
The Calendar Problem
- Monday: the Fire Tower, cathedral, guided walks, museums and Herend are all closed. Only the zoo is open.
- Tuesday: the Dubniczay Palace is closed.
- Sunday: Herend is closed.
- Guided walks are published through 29 November. Check the archdiocese’s walk page for December onward.
- The Fire Tower: from November to mid-March, phone the museum before you go (+36 30 072 6942).
- Herend is closed on 1 November, its shop is closed 24 to 26 December and 31 December to 1 January, and its 2026 season opened only on 31 March, so check before a trip from January to March.
- The Heroes’ Gate exhibition at the castle entrance is temporarily closed.
A Saturday, Hour by Hour
| Time | What | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 08:00 | InterCity from Budapest-Déli | Or 08:07 from Kelenföld. Arrives 09:28 |
| 09:38 | Bus 4 or 4A from the station | 350 Ft in advance, 11 minutes to the bus station |
| 10:00 | Fire Tower | 1,500 Ft, tickets at Vár utca 4 |
| 10:30 | Guided walk from Vár utca 31 | Archbishop's Palace and Gizella Chapel, 3,500 Ft, about 70 minutes |
| 11:45 | Cathedral, then the Benedek Hill stairs | 500 Ft |
| 12:30 | Lunch in the castle quarter or at Óváros tér | |
| 13:30 | Séd valley walk to the viaduct | Free, about two hours with a coffee |
| 16:00 | Bus 2, 4 or 4A back to the station | 11 to 12 minutes |
| 16:32 | InterCity to Budapest | Arrives Déli 17:59. Or stay for dinner and take a later train |
With Herend instead of the valley: after the cathedral, have an early lunch and take the 13:35 bus from Veszprém bus station, arriving at 13:54. See the workshop and museum, then take the 16:02 or 17:02 bus from Herend, lakótelep bejárati út to Veszprém station and the 16:32 or 17:32 InterCity, arriving at Déli at 17:59 or 18:59.
Veszprém and Lake Balaton
Balatonfüred is 25 to 35 minutes from Veszprém bus station, with buses every 15 to 30 minutes for 500 Ft, and direct trains run from Balatonfüred to Budapest-Déli at 2 past every second hour in the afternoon, 1 hour 52 minutes for 2,520 Ft. That makes a one-way loop possible: castle in the morning, lakeshore promenade in the afternoon. In winter the lake gives you a view and little else, so from November to March Herend is the better add-on, and the Balaton loop suits a fair-weather day or a Sunday. For a full day on the lake, see our Lake Balaton day trip guide and the Tihany guide.
The Verdict
Come for the city of queens. Take the 08:00 InterCity, climb the Fire Tower, book the 10:30 walk into the Gizella Chapel and the Archbishop’s Palace, and spend the afternoon either in the Séd valley or at the Herend workshop. Avoid Mondays, keep Sundays for the valley and the lake, and you have one of the fullest days you can get from Budapest for under 3,000 Ft each way.
