What Makes Borgáta Thermal Bath Special?

The bath exists because somebody was looking for something else. Prospectors drilling for hydrocarbons at the foot of the Kis-Somlyó hill in 1964 hit 47°C water instead, the villages around the site formed an association to do something with it, and the bath opened in August 1968 on what was mostly volunteer labor.

It is still a village operation rather than a resort. The company that runs it, Borgáta Fürdő Nonprofit Kft., belongs to the municipality, and the place has never been renovated into the anonymous glass-and-chrome look that the big Hungarian spa towns all converged on. Five pools sit in a three-hectare park, an adult day ticket is 2,800 Ft, and the village itself has fewer than 300 residents.

What Are the Health Benefits of Borgáta’s Thermal Water?

The operator publishes the full water analysis, and it is a mineral-heavy, low-salt profile: 56 mg/l calcium, 33 mg/l magnesium and 317 mg/l hydrogen carbonate against just 11.5 mg/l sodium, with 55 mg/l free carbon dioxide and a measured pH of 7.1. The operator describes the water as suited to people with rheumatic and musculoskeletal complaints.

One thing to settle before you build a treatment trip around it. Borgáta does not hold itself out as certified gyógyvíz, and no listing we could read places it among the county’s medicinal wells. Vas county’s 19 officially recognized medicinal wells sit in Sárvár, Bükfürdő, Szombathely, Celldömölk, Mesteri and Szeleste. The bath brands itself Termálfürdő, never Gyógyfürdő, and claims the designation nowhere on its own site. Come for a warm, mineral-rich soak in a quiet park. If you want water with a certificate attached to it, Sárvár is 15 km up the road and Celldömölk is 15 km the other way.

How Many Pools Does Borgáta Have?

Pro tip: The afternoon ticket is the value play, the last three hours of the day for 1,800 Ft. If you swim rather than soak, the high-season 9:00 to 10:00 swim ticket costs 700 Ft, which is less than a coffee in Budapest.

For comparison, Budapest’s Rudas Bath charges 12,000 Ft for an all-zone day ticket from Monday to Thursday, 15,000 Ft from Friday to Sunday and 16,000 Ft on holidays and in high season. A day at Borgáta runs under a quarter of the cheapest of those.

When Is Borgáta Open and What Are the Best Times to Visit?

Borgáta operates seasonally, spring through autumn, and is closed over the winter.

The pricing tells you how to use the day. The 9:00 to 10:00 swim ticket only exists in high season, so an early lap swim is a summer-only trick. The afternoon ticket kicks in three hours before close, which makes late afternoon the cheapest way to sit in the thermal pools. And the two-entry day pass at 3,400 Ft is worth it only if you plan to leave the site mid-day and come back, since a standard day ticket admits you once.

Is There Accommodation at Borgáta?

Yes. The campsite has 50 pitches on the bath’s own grounds, with shaded ground, sanitary blocks and direct access to the pools.

One thing to plan around: staying in the campsite always comes with bath use, and the operator will not sell you a pitch without a bath ticket. Budget both. A tent is 1,000 Ft a night, a car 1,800 Ft, a caravan plus car 1,800 Ft, a campervan 1,500 Ft, a motorcycle 1,200 Ft, an electrical hookup 1,200 Ft and a dog 800 Ft, and the adult stay charge is 1,200 Ft on top of the bath ticket. Campers buy a multi-entry bath ticket rather than a day ticket: 3,400 Ft for an adult, 2,800 Ft for a pensioner or student, 1,700 Ft for a child. The site takes a 10,000 Ft deposit against the keys and it has to be forint, in cash.

If a tent is not your idea of a spa break, the Borgátafürdő end of the village is a cluster of holiday houses and apartments built around the bath in its 1970s heyday, and several of them still rent to visitors.

How Do I Get to Borgáta Thermal Bath?

Borgáta sits in the eastern corner of Vas county, in the region called the Kemenesalja, roughly:

By car: Route 84 runs a few hundred meters south of the village and is the road you want from anywhere distant. Turn off onto road 8415 for the village center and the bath.

By public transport: there is no railway station in Borgáta. Realistically this is a drive, or a train to Sárvár or Celldömölk plus a taxi for the last stretch.

What visitors actually report

The word that comes up more than any other is retro, and it is meant as a compliment. This is a bath that was built in the sixties and never renovated into anonymity, and the people who keep coming back are the ones who wanted exactly that.

The other consistent notes: mature trees give the site real shade, which matters in August in a country where most strand baths are a treeless concrete pan. The pools are kept clean. It is quiet, and the quiet is the product. The children’s splash pool does its job for small kids, and sunbeds can be rented rather than fought over.

If you want an affordable, unpolished thermal bath away from the crowds, yes. At 2,800 HUF (about $9) entry it costs less than a quarter of a Budapest all-zone day ticket, and the water is genuinely mineral-rich. If you are travelling for certified medicinal treatment specifically, Sárvár or Bükfürdő are the addresses, not this one.

Is Borgáta suitable for families with children?

It works well for families. There is a dedicated children’s splash pool, the park has proper shade, and the calm is the whole point. Children aged 6 to 14 pay 1,500 Ft, and the afternoon child ticket is 1,200 Ft.

Do I need to bring my own towel and flip-flops?

Bring both. A changing cabin costs 500 Ft and a valuables locker is 500 Ft with a 500 Ft deposit on top. There is a buffet and a shop on site, so food is covered.

Can I visit Borgáta in winter?

No, Borgáta is a seasonal facility and closes for the winter. For year-round thermal bathing, Hévíz is about an hour south and open all year.

Is English spoken at Borgáta?
